Sempaya hotsprings in Semuliki National Park

Visit Uganda and explore the famous Sempaya hotsprings in Semuliki National Park. Semuliki National Park is located in the western part of Uganda in Bundibujo District. It is an extending forest of the great Ituri Congo forest, and the conservation area is a haven of birds, the park covers a total area of  220 square kilometers.

It was established  in the 1993 and is one of the oldest national parks to be gazette in the country, experience the trueness of the wilderness of the great albertine rift valley region extending to the Democratic republic of Congo, a part of the Park is the Semliki national reserve, managed under the Uganda wildlife authority, it is one of the rich bio diverse environments of Uganda.

The national park is known for the natural features formed as a result of movement of tectonic plates, the hot springs are known to be both female and male, it an attractive feature to both the locals and international travelers, the Sempaya hot springs are a highlight of a guided nature walk in the national park, the spring rises up to 2 meters from the ground located in a swampy bushy area of the park, the female hot spring is known as the “Nyasimbi”and the male one “Sempaya” the hot springs have water with temperatures of up to 100 degrees, this is hot enough to even boil an egg,  the locals take the springs to be of great importance to their local communities, the female spring is believed to be used for fertility giving to the local women. There are well developed paths through the conservation area to the springs.

Besides the hot springs of the park there are many other natural attractions of the park like the wildlife species, expect to spot a number of species including the African elephants, monkeys, crocodiles, Kobs and many other species, the parks a perfect place to go birding in Uganda over 400 bird types are present in the national park most of which are endemics of the great albertine rift valley region, river Semliki serves as a major water catching point of the park to animals and the locals communities.

Popular activities of the Semliki national park include visiting the Sempaya hotsprings, guided nature walks to the springs presents an opportunity to view wildlife, mostly the primates of the park, the walk to the spring lasts for an hour’s time, they guides will take along raw eggs for a snack at the springs as the water here can boil the eggs!, guided nature walks through the trails of the park, the 13 kilometer trail known as Kirumia, expect to meet primates like the red colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, it mention a few. Birding watching, semliki is an important birding point of Uganda, it hosts both albertine and endemics of the Congo forest, example birds of the park include, white crested hornbill, red-billed dwarf, hornbills, great blue turaco, yellow throated nicator, Game drives in the national park expect to see forest elephants, buffaloes, waterbucks, crocodiles, warthogs, they pygmy hippopotamus.
